The following table contains sample output from Author-it. The output has been achieved through a combination of Author-it configuration, Word VBA macros, and VB scripts, all developed by me.

Word Output

This guide contains a preface, chapters, appendixes, and an index.

AfterPublish macros include the following tasks:

  • Fixing appendix headings so they appear correctly in the table of contents.
  • Updating page numbers in the footers to include chapter number or appendix letter.
  • Inserting optional line break symbols in long words to allow word-wrapping at the end of lines, particularly in table cells (for specific character styles only). For example, for long variable or function names.
  • Formatting notes, tips, and cautions.
  • Formatting tables by applying consistent shading to all 'Table Header' styled cells.
  • Embedding linked graphics.
  • Updating all fields, table of contents, and index.

Word Output

Similar design to the first Word document, however, it has additional graphics in headers and footers.

In addition to the AfterPublish macros described above, macros for this document also include the following task:

  • Inserting the graphic on the first page of every chapter (to the left of the chapter title) and inserting the shaded side-bar in the margin of each page.
  • Resize and make the graphics in the final chapter floating graphics.

HTML Output

This HTML output is the same content as the first Word document in this table. The design (colours, icons, navigation graphics) were created by a colleague. It uses the DHTML Search templates as a base, but has been significantly customised.

After the book has been published to HTML, a VB script is used to make further customisations, including:

  • Adding the navigation bar to the top of each page.
  • Adding a feedback button (the envelope icon) next to each topic heading.
  • Formatting tables by applying consistent shading to all 'Table Header' styled cells.
  • Formatting notes, tips, and cautions.

How did I scramble the content?

The documentation is real, released documentation, so I needed to scramble the content (to disguise the content and avoid copyright breach). The following process was used to scramble the output:

  1. The book was published to XML from Author-it.
  2. A program I wrote was run over the XML to replace all content with random text.
  3. The XML was imported back into Author-it.
  4. The book was published.
  5. Using Fireworks batch processing, all of the graphics were blurred and noise added.
